Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cataract?
A cataract is an opacity (or cloudiness) in the lens of the eye. This restricts light passing through the eye and reaching the retina. When this occurs, vision is affected.
What Are The Symptoms?
Common symptoms of cataracts are:
1. Cloudy or blurry vision
2. Light sensitivity from car headlights that seem too bright at night; glare from lamps or very bright sunlight; or the appearance of a halo around lights.
3. Poor or reduced night vision
4. Double or multiple vision (this symptom often goes away as the cataract progresses)
5. “Second sight” where near vision becomes possible without glasses again because of the cataract developing in the lens. This state is usually temporary, and followed by progressive loss of distance vision
6. A need for frequent changes of glasses or contact lenses.
What Causes Cataract?
The most common cause of cataracts is aging. Others include:
1. Inherited or developmental problems
2. Health problems such as diabetes
3. Medications such as steroids
4. Trauma to the eye
Cataract Treatment

5. Reduced dependence on corrective eyewear -
What is LASIK ?
What does LASIK stand for?
LASIK stands for “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis”. Using a laser, your LASIK surgeon will permanently change the shape of your cornea. It is a refractive surgery. LASIK can be used to correct a number of vision problems including astigmatism and myopia.
Am I a candidate ?
Every eye is unique and hence it becomes very much essential to adopt stringent screening procedures to avoid complications and minimize risk factors, however rare they are. Few initial conditions that decides your candidature are
1. Age – 18 or more
2. Patients with medical illness such as diabetes, blood pressure may need additional investigation.
3. Prevalent eye health issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, keratoconus, and corneal diseases are not be desirable for LASIK procedure.
4. Stable vision for the last one years
5. Devoid of eye injuries
6. Pregnant women are not considered for the procedure
-
Is LASIK eye surgery painful?
The short answer is no, LASIK surgery doesn’t hurt. The eye can actually be numbed with drops alone, so one of the beauties of LASIK is that no other sedation is needed. No heavy sedatives, no injections, just eye drops! The most you would feel is some mild pressure. After your LASIK procedure, you may experience some sensitivity and dryness, similar to having a dry contact in your eye. The prescribed drops will help alleviate this feeling.
-
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a slow progressive irreversible condition of the eye wherein the pressure (IOP) inside the eye may rise causing damage to the Optic nerve of the eye. This is seen as more common in the elderly but can occur at any age group.
Symptoms
Glaucoma has no major symptoms and hence the disease can be a potentially blinding condition.
In severe cases, those with glaucoma may experience the following symptoms:
1. Sudden decline in vision quality
2. Glare and light sensitivity
3. Extreme eye pain and redness
4. Headaches
5. Nausea and vomiting
Treatment
Perimetry and OCT are required for diagnosis and follow up apart from tonometry and Retinal imaging.
Glaucoma diseases can be treated either through Medical, Laser or Surgery.
>80% of people are unaware that they might have glaucoma. -
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a progressive disease in which the cornea thins, and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. The change in the shape of the eye causes distorted vision.
Symptoms
1. Vision becomes blurry or glaring
2. Tearing
3. Refractive power is unstable, requiring the frequent changing of glasses or contact lenses
4.Sensitivity to light
Treatment Keratoconus can be treated either through Medicine or Surgery. -
Am I old enough to wear contact lenses?
That depends on how responsible you are; this decision is best made jointly between you, your parents and your eye doctor.

What exactly does "20/20 vision" mean?
"20/20 vision" is commonly accepted as the standard of normal distance vision for a human being. Basically it means "good visual acuity at 20 feet." So if your vision is 20/20, you can read certain sizes of letters on a Snellen chart clearly at 20 feet or closer. But if your friend has 20/15 vision, his visual acuity is better than yours: you would have to stand 15 feet away from the chart to read the smaller letters that he can read while standing 20 feet away. Conversely, someone with 20/30 vision has worse distance vision than you.
By the way, visual acuity at a distance isn't the only measure of how good your vision is. You could have 20/20 distance vision but still have difficulty seeing at night because of poor contrast sensitivity. Or you could have near vision problems because you're over 40 and experiencing presbyopia. -
What is dry eye?
Dry eye is a condition of insufficient tears to continually provide adequate lubrication to the eye. Tears are are essential for the maintained health of the front surface of the eye as well as clear and stable vision. People with dry eye either do not produce enough tears or are producing poor quality tears. Dry eye is quite common and frequently a chronic or long term problem.

Can both eyes be done at the same time for cataract surgery?
While there are certainly proponents of bilateral surgery, the question of treating both eyes at the same time remains a controversial subject. While some practices cite the experiences of safety, convenience and cost savings while doing both eyes at the same time, we believe there are clear cut advantages in separating the timing of the surgery between the two eyes. When dates of surgery are separated, the unique fine tuning adjustments that we make at Specialty Eyecare Centre help us provide a higher level of care and obtain better results. We can keep complications to a minimum. In the rare instance of an eye infection after surgery, we can rest assured this will not occur in both eyes at the same time. We prefer to separate the dates of surgery 2-3 weeks to provide optimum care with minimal risk.
